Cropin Teams Up with AWS to Tackle Global Hunger Using AI

In an initiative aimed at combating the escalating issue of global hunger and food insecurity, Bengaluru based agritech startup Cropin Technology has joined forces with Amazon Web Services (AWS) India Private Limited. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is set to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to forge a solution that promises to revolutionize how we approach food security on a global scale.

As the world grapples with alarming statistics revealing that between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, reversing decades of progress, this partnership aims to leverage cutting-edge technology to offer a beacon of hope. This collaboration is not just about technological innovation; it’s about making a tangible difference in the lives of millions of people around the world.

Cropin and AWS have embarked on this mission with a clear objective: to develop an AI-powered platform that integrates comprehensive data on global farmland and climate intelligence. This platform is designed to serve as a decision-making tool for governments, development agencies, and agribusinesses, empowering them to secure food for vulnerable populations.

The core of this solution lies in its ability to amalgamate satellite imagery with field images and remote data, thereby enhancing agricultural analytics through scalable models. These models aim to offer insights at both micro and macro levels, enabling the identification of patterns and anomalies in crop production and quality across the globe.

To achieve these ambitious goals, Cropin will utilize a suite of AWS services, including Amazon Bedrock for access to high-performing foundation models, Amazon Q for generative AI-powered assistance, Amazon QuickSight for business intelligence, and AWS’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure. AWS’s contribution goes beyond technology; it extends to providing Cropin with technical expertise and industry insights, particularly in the realms of agriculture and sustainability.

The insights generated by this collaborative effort are intended to be accessible and actionable. They will be integrated into Cropin’s open-source dashboard and disseminated through modern communication means like WhatsApp and SMS alerts. This ensures that crucial information reaches the stakeholders who need it most: farmers, field officers, governments, development agencies, and agribusinesses.

Moreover, AWS plans to explore opportunities for Cropin to collaborate with prestigious research organizations and academic institutions, such as the Harvard Data Science Initiative (HDSI). This partnership will focus on driving research and development in areas critical to the future of our planet: food security, climate-resilient agriculture, and food sustainability.

This initiative comes at a critical time. Recent estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations have highlighted a dire increase in global hunger, with the pandemic reversing decades of progress. However, the collaboration between Cropin and AWS embodies the promise of technology as a vital tool in the strategic decision-making process to combat food insecurity. By leveraging AI, governments and organizations can analyze insights from diverse data sets, enabling the development and testing of holistic strategies to address this global challenge.

Shalini Kapoor, Director and Chief Technologist at AWS India Private Limited, emphasized the impact of this partnership, stating, “Our work with Cropin showcases the power of advanced compute capabilities on the cloud to drive social and environmental impact. AWS’s generative AI, simulation, and data analytics technologies can help organizations like Cropin surface actionable and relevant insights from diverse data sets, and scale their solution globally to empower decision makers to reduce food insecurity.”

In a world facing unprecedented challenges, the alliance between Cropin and AWS represents a hopeful step forward. It underscores the transformative potential of technology to address global crises and highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping a future where food security is a reality for all.
