This innovative feature is currently in the testing phase, available to a select group of users, both free and subscribed to the Plus version. The goal is to eliminate the redundancy often experienced in AI conversations, where users find themselves reiterating their preferences for tasks such as email drafting or note-taking.

OpenAI has showcased several practical applications of this memory feature:

ChatGPT can now remember a user’s preferred format for meeting notes, applying it automatically in future note-taking tasks.

In personal use cases, the AI can suggest creative ideas, like designing a birthday card featuring a jellyfish in a party hat for a child fond of marine life.

User Control and Privacy

User autonomy is a cornerstone of this update. ChatGPT allows users to dictate what it should remember, either by direct instruction or through the AI’s passive information gathering during conversations. Moreover, users can review and delete these memories at their discretion, ensuring privacy and control.

For those concerned about privacy, the feature includes an option for temporary chats, which are not stored or utilized for AI training purposes. OpenAI has also taken measures to prevent the AI from retaining sensitive information, such as personal health details. Additionally, data from ChatGPT Enterprise clients will not contribute to the training of the chatbot.

As this feature undergoes testing, selected users are reminded that it is enabled by default but can be deactivated if desired. This adjustment can be made in the settings under Personalisation and Memory options.
