Neural Concept’s AI Enhances Aerodynamics in Formula 1

In a striking showcase of how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing industries beyond the digital realm, Neural Concept, a Switzerland-based AI startup, is now playing a pivotal role in Formula 1 racing. Founded by Pierre Baqué, Neural Concept began its journey with aerodynamic innovations for bicycles and has swiftly progressed to optimizing the performance of some of the most elite Formula 1 teams.

Just six years ago, in 2018, Neural Concept’s journey began at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne’s Computer Vision Laboratory. Initially, Baqué and his team focused on enhancing bicycle aerodynamics. Their efforts bore fruit quickly, leading to the creation of the world’s most aerodynamically efficient bicycle that year. This breakthrough bike featured a fully enclosed design, shielding the cyclist within a composite cocoon to minimize wind resistance—a design validated by multiple world records in 2019.

The core technology driving these innovations is Neural Concept Shape (NCS), a machine-learning system that assists engineers in refining and optimizing aerodynamic designs. This software taps into the complex domain of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), enabling quicker, more efficient simulations than traditional methods that involve physical models and wind tunnels. NCS speeds up the process and provides novel insights, allowing engineers to explore aerodynamic possibilities they might not have considered before.

Neural Concept expanded its reach from bicycles to more demanding fields, including aerospace and automotive. Their technology caught the attention of industry giants like Airbus and Safran, propelling the company towards a successful $9.1 million Series A funding round in 2022. Today, with a staff 50, the company is preparing for a Series B round, illustrating its rapid growth and the increasing demand for AI-driven solutions across various industries.

In Formula 1, a sport where aerodynamics plays a crucial role in performance, the impact of the neural concept is profound. Four of the ten Formula 1 teams use the company’s software, including the historic Williams Racing team. Williams Racing, which once dominated the sport during the 1990s, is amidst a revival, and Neural Concept’s technology is a critical tool in their arsenal. The software facilitates more accurate simulations and faster iteration, which is crucial in a sport governed by stringent testing regulations and limited wind tunnel time.

The adoption of Neural Concept’s technology in Formula 1 symbolizes a broader trend: the increasing reliance on AI and machine learning across all facets of automotive engineering. This includes race cars and commercial vehicles where aerodynamics affect fuel efficiency and battery range. Beyond the automotive sector, NCS is beneficial in developing efficient battery-cooling systems, which are vital for electric cars.

Despite Formula 1’s secretive nature, the success of Neural Concept’s partnerships is evident. Teams can achieve more precise correlations between simulations and actual track performance, enhancing their competitive edge. Yet, applying such technologies is not without cost; the investment in NCS can range from €100,000 to €1 million annually, reflecting the substantial value and potential return it offers to high-performance teams.

As AI technology continues to evolve, its potential applications in sports and beyond are boundless. Neural Concept is already exploring other areas, including optimizing electric motors and improving vehicle safety through advanced crash simulations. The ongoing integration of AI into various aspects of design and manufacturing heralds a new era of innovation driven by a synergy of human expertise and algorithmic precision.

This blend of high stakes, cutting-edge technology, and relentless pursuit of efficiency captures the essence of modern Formula 1 racing. It highlights the crucial role of AI in shaping the future of industries that rely on speed, both on the track and in the market.
