Pienso Empowers Non-Tech Experts to Build AI

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming businesses and daily life, the challenge of making AI accessible and practical for non-experts has been a significant roadblock. Enter Pienso, a groundbreaking startup that’s revolutionizing how organizations deploy AI, by empowering non-technical professionals to build and refine AI models without needing to write a single line of code.

Founded in 2016 by Birago Jones and Karthik Dinakar, two MIT alumni, Pienso emerged from the duo’s academic work aimed at combating online bullying with AI. They quickly realized the potential of their tools to democratize AI, making it accessible to domain experts outside the tech sphere. This vision led to the creation of Pienso, designed to bridge the gap between AI’s potential and its practical application in various industries.

Despite AI’s rapid advancement, a 2023 S&P Global survey revealed that approximately half of the companies with AI projects in production are still in the early stages of development, hindered by challenges in data management, security, and computing resources. Furthermore, nearly half of these companies feel unprepared to implement AI effectively within the next five years.

Pienso aims to address these challenges head-on. Its no-code platform allows researchers, marketers, and customer support teams to easily build and deploy AI models, leveraging their domain expertise. This approach not only democratizes AI but also ensures models are finely tuned to the specific needs and nuances of each business.

The platform guides users through the process of annotating or labeling training data, which is crucial for AI models to learn specific tasks. Whether deploying in the cloud or on-premises, Pienso integrates seamlessly with enterprise systems, maintaining data security and privacy.

Notable users of Pienso’s platform include Sky, a U.K. broadcaster using the tool to analyze customer service calls, and an unnamed U.S. government agency leveraging it for monitoring illegal weapons trafficking. These examples highlight Pienso’s versatility across different sectors, promising more accurate and privacy-conscious AI models trained on company-specific data.

Pienso operates on a yearly licensing model, where costs are based on the number of AI models deployed. This flexible pricing strategy encourages experimentation and refinement of AI models without significant upfront investment.

The startup’s innovative approach has attracted substantial investment, including a recent $10 million Series A funding round. This investment will support Pienso’s expansion, enhancing its platform and extending its reach to more organizations eager to harness AI’s potential.

In a world increasingly reliant on AI, Pienso’s mission is clear: to make AI accessible, practical, and empowering for domain experts across all fields. By doing so, Pienso is not only advancing AI technology but also ensuring it serves the diverse and dynamic needs of businesses and society at large.
