Microsoft Enhances Windows 11 Apps with AI Capabilities
In a bid to innovate, Microsoft is rolling out intriguing updates to Windows 11, bolstering core applications with new features, one of which is powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Empowering Notepad with Copilot Integration
The latest changes target two essential applications: Notepad and Snipping Tool. For Notepad users, a notable addition is the integration of an AI-powered feature called ‘Explain with Copilot’. This functionality enables users to select any text within Notepad, right-click, or use the Ctrl + E shortcut to summon Copilot, which provides additional insights or explanations about the selected content.
Microsoft explains, “You can ask Copilot in Windows to help explain log files, code segments, or any selected content directly from within Notepad.” This feature, labeled version 11.2401.25.0, is currently available to testers in the Dev and Canary channels, although some users may experience delays in its deployment due to a known issue.
Enhanced Snipping Tool
Meanwhile, the Snipping Tool receives an upgrade, introducing the ability to annotate screenshots with shapes and arrows. This addition proves invaluable for creating instructional materials or step-by-step guides, allowing users to highlight specific elements within screenshots.
Windows 11 Beta Channel Update
In the Beta channel, Windows 11 users will notice a minor yet significant change in the Copilot functionality. Build 22635.3140 relocates the Copilot icon in the taskbar to the far right-hand side, aligning it with the opening panel of the AI. Microsoft justifies this adjustment by stating that it enhances user experience and accessibility.
Analysis: Anticipation for Future Updates
Speculation arises regarding the potential release of Moment 5, the next update for Windows 11, rumored to offer the ability to undock Copilot from the right side of the desktop. While this remains conjecture, it underscores Microsoft’s commitment to evolving its AI capabilities.
The integration of Copilot into Notepad signifies a fundamental step towards enhancing Windows 11 applications with AI functionalities. While the current implementation is basic compared to previous rumors about a comprehensive Cowriter assistant, it sets a precedent for future developments.
